Archaeological Trenches (Sondes)

THE FIRST SCIENTIFIC WINDOW INTO THE SITE'S FULL HISTORY

Five excavation campaigns between 2018 and 2023 revealed a stratigraphic sequence spanning from the early medieval period (walls at 2.40–3.20 metres depth) through Ottoman occupation (post-1478) to the 19th century, recovering over 200 catalogued artefacts and more than 3,000 material fragments — the first scientific evidence for the site's full occupational history.

Church of St. George

FROM PARISH CHURCH TO MOSQUE TO RUIN

Built as the city's parish church during the medieval Crnojević period, St. George's was converted into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest of 1478 and served in that capacity for four centuries before being demolished in 1878. Its remains in the lower town still bear a foundation inscription from its medieval phase.

Cistern

A GREAT RESERVOIR DELIBERATELY BURIED

This elliptical cistern on Plateau II, approximately 6.20 metres in diameter, was constructed during the medieval period as a critical water supply infrastructure. It was intentionally filled with Morača river gravel at some point during the Ottoman period to level the plateau surface, with excavations reaching 3.75 metres depth and 17 visible stone courses still in place.

Defensive Walls & Towers

THREE BUILDING PHASES WRITTEN IN STONE

The walls stand approximately 15 metres high and 2 metres wide, with three distinct construction phases visible in their fabric — pre-gunpowder medieval masonry (before the 15th century), refined Venetian-style work from the time of Ivan Crnojević (late 15th century), and coarser Ottoman-period additions (post-1478).

Entry Gateway

THE SINGLE CONTROLLED THRESHOLD

The only entrance to the fortress is a narrow vaulted passageway on the southern wall, a defensive feature characteristic of medieval fortification practice. It remained the sole point of access throughout the Ottoman garrison period and into the 19th century.

Object 5 (Northwest Building)

A DECORATED CAPITAL FROM THE ASHES

The sole surviving structure in the northwest sector, Object 5 was in use across multiple periods — its deepest walls reaching bedrock at 4.10 metres likely date to the medieval phase, while a carved stone capital recovered from a layer of ash and char points to a violent destruction event, most probably associated with one of the Ottoman conquests or later conflicts of the 17th–19th centuries.

CENTURIES OF RESIDENTIAL AND MILITARY USE

These four structures formed the core of the southeast sector from the medieval period onwards, likely serving residential, military, and storage functions. Their remains reflect continuous rebuilding across the Crnojević (15th century), Ottoman (1478–1878), and possibly early modern periods.

Five excavation campaigns between 2018 and 2023 revealed this full stratigraphic sequence, reaching down to bedrock.

The Fortress — Overview

A MEDIEVAL HILLTOP STRONGHOLD ABOVE LAKE SKADAR

Žabljak Crnojevića covers approximately 1,400 m² enclosed by walls up to 15 metres high with six towers. Founded as early as the 10th century and continuously occupied through the medieval and Ottoman periods until 1878, the complex reflects over eight centuries of construction, conflict, and adaptation.

The Suburbium — Lower Town (Podgrađe)

A SETTLEMENT BEYOND THE WALLS

The lower town developed during the medieval period as the fortress grew in importance, reaching its peak of around 300 households under the Crnojević lords in the 15th century. It continued to be inhabited through the Ottoman period, with the Church of St. George remaining its central landmark until 1878.

WATER AT THE HEART OF THE HILLTOP FORTRESS

Located on Plateau IV, this well served as one of the fortress's primary water sources, likely functioning from the medieval period through Ottoman occupation. Together with the now-buried cistern on Plateau II, it reflects the critical role of water management for a hilltop settlement that once housed hundreds of inhabitants.
